Day 1⃣ — Auckland to Whangarei (2.5 hours drive)
Pick up your campervan in Auckland (or the airport if you’re flying in), grab a coffee, and start heading north on SH1. This first leg is cruisy, with a few nice spots along the way.
Places to stop:
- Puhoi – Small town with old-school charm and a famous pub
- Warkworth – Good stop for food or fuel
- Whangarei Falls – Easy walk, great waterfall for photos
Where to stay:
- There’s freedom camping just outside Whangarei
- Or check out a local holiday park for showers and a comfy night
“Pack snacks and drinks — once you’re out of Auckland, things spread out fast”.
Day 2⃣ – Whangarei to Doubtless Bay (3 hours drive)
Wake up early and head further north. Today’s route takes you through quiet towns, rolling hills, and coastal views. You’ll love it.
On the way:
- Ruakaka Beach – Quick beach break
- Mangonui – Stop here for fish & chips right by the water (locals love it)
- Coopers Beach – Chill, great for a swim or just sitting in the sand
Where to stay:
- Freedom camping at Coopers Beach Reserve
- Or stay at a campground near Whatuwhiwhi
“Doubtless Bay is super peaceful. Great place to slow down and catch a sunset”.
Day 3⃣ – Doubtless Bay to Cape Reinga (5 hours drive)
Big day today! In this road trip you will be heading all the way to the top — Cape Reinga. It’s the northern tip of New Zealand, where two oceans meet. The place feels spiritual and quiet. It’s also a big part of Māori culture.
Must-see stops:
- Te Paki Sand Dunes – Rent a board and slide down the dunes
- 90 Mile Beach – Only drive on it if your rental allows it (most don’t, unless it’s 4WD)
- Cape Reinga Lighthouse – Walk to the edge, take it in — it’s special
After that, head back south to Ahipara, a laid-back surf town at the bottom of 90 Mile Beach.
Where to stay:
- Ahipara Holiday Park – Close to the beach, good facilities
- Or find a spot by the beach if you’re self-contained
“It is recommended to bring lunch and snacks — there are not many shops up this way”.
Day 4⃣ – Ahipara back to Auckland (5.5 hours drive)
Time to head back to the city. It’s a long drive, so break it up:
Good places to stop:
- Kerikeri – Check out Rainbow Falls
- Paihia – Chill by the bay, maybe grab a coffee
- Wellsford – Good halfway stop for food
You’ll get back to Auckland by evening. Drop off your campervan, stretch your legs, and smile — you just did a real New Zealand road trip.
