If you are planning to travel New Zealand for 3 months or more you may find that buying your own vehicle is an attractive option and, if you can get a backpacker car insurance with it then you will be more safe on the road.

Older but serviceable vehicles are very affordable for backpackers. However it could completely ruin your holiday if you have an accident leaving you with a big bill to pay.

Different type of backpacker car insurance

Comprehensive

In the event of an accident you know that you’ll have the protection to cover damages to your car and also any damages you may cause to someone else’s car or property.

√ Agreed Value: What your vehicle is worth, including any accessories you have or modifications you’ve made. So you know exactly what the company will pay if it’s written off or stolen.

√ Damage to your own vehicle: If there is an accident or your car is damaged, the company will pay for the repairs or pay you the value agreed on when you sign for a  policy.

√ Legal liability cover: If you are responsible for damage to someone else’s vehicle or property you will have protection against any claim they make, up to $20 million.

√ Customer service centres: Depending on the insurance company the service will be different, some companies work better than other on terms of repairs & service.

√ Young driver flexibility: There will be times when younger drivers (age 24 or younger) may need to drive your car, and you haven’t named them on your policy. With some companies, they’re still covered, subject or not to a separate excess payment.

√ No fault, no excess: If you’re in an accident that wasn’t your fault and you can identify whose fault it was, you may not have to pay any excess. Check the company policy to make sure it includes this advantage.
