Auckland City Car Park: City Guide

Auckland city car park

1. Parking in Central Auckland

Finding parking in central Auckland is accessible with various options, including CBD car park buildings, on-street parking, and pay-by-plate systems.

Here’s a guide to help you navigate parking in Auckland City Centre.

1.1. On-Street Parking

On-street parking in Auckland City Centre has no time limits, so you can stay as long as you need and only pay for the time you use.

There are three pricing zones; if you park for less than 10 minutes, it’s free.

You can pay for on-street parking at a pay-by-plate machine or the AT Park app.

Starting July 1, paid parking in the Green and Orange Zones extends to Sundays and public holidays.

Charges are $2.50 per hour for the first two hours and $4 per additional hour from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

From October 1, overnight paid parking will be introduced in the City Centre Parking Zone.

Auckland Transport (AT) offers several open-air car parks in central Auckland. These provide additional parking options, often at varying rates.

2. Changes to Parking Prices

As of August 28, 2023, Auckland Transport increased parking charges to adjust for inflation. Here are the new rates:

Zone 1 (Central)

Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm: $6 per hour for the first two hours, then $11 per hour

Monday to Friday, 6 pm to 10 pm: $3.5 per hour for the first two hours, then $6 per hour

Saturday, Sunday, and public holidays, 8 am to 10 pm: $3.5 per hour for the first two hours, then $6 per hour

Zone 2 and 4 (Outer)

Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm: $4 per hour for the first two hours, then $7 per hour

Saturday, 8 am to 6 pm: $2.5 per hour for the first two hours, then $4 per hour

Zone 3 and 5 (Outer)

Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm: $4.5 per hour for the first two hours, then $8 per hour

Saturday, 8 am to 6 pm: $2.5 per hour for the first two hours, then $4 per hour

Why These Changes?

Auckland Transport faces increasing costs to meet the city’s transport needs. The Auckland Council’s Long-Term Plan encourages AT to increase revenue through parking charges.

The changes aim to balance drivers’ needs with the costs of maintaining parking infrastructure, ensuring that those who use the parking spaces help cover the associated expenses.

3. Resident Parking

Currently, no new resident parking permits are available within the city center. Residents with existing permits are not affected by the recent changes.

By managing parking through pricing and time restrictions, Auckland aims to make parking more efficient and fair.

This will help maintain the city’s transportation system while supporting a vibrant urban environment.
