The good news is that purchasing a campervan is surprisingly easy, a country designed for backpackers and tourists excited to explore all the nature New Zealand has to offer.

But before you start looking at campervans for sale, you may be wondering:

What documents do I actually need?

In this guide, we’ll explain everything you need to buy and register a campervan in New Zealand.

Can Foreigners Buy a Campervan in New Zealand?

Yes, absolutely.

You do not need to be a New Zealand resident or citizen to buy a campervan in New Zealand.

Every year, thousands of backpackers and tourists buy cars and campervans shortly after landing in Auckland.

In fact, Auckland is usually the first stop for most travellers, which is why it has one of the biggest markets for used campervans and backpacker cars in the country.

Documents You Need to Buy a Campervan in New Zealand

The requirements are quite simple.

Usually, you will need:

  • A passport
  • A New Zealand address
  • A New Zealand phone number (recommended)
  • A valid driving licence
  • Payment for the vehicle

That’s it! Let’s go through each one. (briefly)

1. Your Passport

Your passport is usually the only form of identification you’ll need when buying a campervan.

Most dealers and private sellers will ask to see it to confirm your identity. If you’re a tourist, your passport is normally enough to complete the purchase.

2. A New Zealand Address

To register a vehicle in New Zealand, you need to provide a local address.

Don’t worry if you’ve just arrived and don’t have a permanent place to stay yet.

Many travellers use:

  • Their hostel address
  • A friend’s address
  • Their Airbnb address
  • A family member’s address
  • A mail forwarding service

You do not need to own the property. You simply need an address where you can receive mail if necessary.

👉 When buying a campervan from Travel Cars NZ, you can use any of their mail boxes, its a free service for customers.

3. A New Zealand Phone Number

A local phone number is not legally required to buy a campervan, but it makes life much easier.

You may need it for:

  • Insurance quotes
  • Selling your campervan later
  • Booking repairs or services
  • Contacting dealers and mechanics
  • Setting up roadside assistance

Getting a New Zealand SIM card is quick and inexpensive, from 20$ to 30$NZD per month.

4. A Valid Driving Licence

To drive in New Zealand, you need a valid driver’s licence.

Depending on your country, you may also need an International Driving Permit (IDP).

If Your Licence Is in English

If your licence is written entirely in English, you can normally drive in New Zealand for up to 12 months.

Examples include:

  • United Kingdom
  • United States
  • Canada
  • Ireland

If Your Licence Is Not in English

If your licence is in another language, such as:

  • French
  • Spanish
  • German
  • Italian
  • Chinese

You will usually need either:

  • An International Driving Permit (IDP), or
  • An approved English translation.

Always check the latest rules before arriving in New Zealand.

5. Payment for the Campervan

Most dealers accept:

  • Bank transfer
  • Wise transfer
  • Cash
  • International transfer

Private sellers often prefer cash or bank transfer. If you’re transferring a large amount from overseas, make sure you to plan ahead time for the money to arrive.
